The issue

Every day, residents of Point Vernon and Hervey Bay face the terrifying consequences of hooning and dangerous driving. The constant roar of engines and screeching of tyres is more than just a nuisance—it's a serious threat to the safety of our community. Imagine stepping out in your neighborhood, only to be met with vehicles speeding recklessly through the streets, endangering the lives of children, pedestrians, and other motorists. This isn't just about noise; it's about our right to feel safe in our own homes and communities.

Over recent months, Hervey Bay and Point Vernon residents have repeatedly witnessed vehicles driving recklessly through residential streets, performing burnouts, speeding, and placing pedestrians, cyclists, children, and other motorists at risk.

On Sunday, 14 June 2026 multiple incidents were captured on home security cameras, including vehicles performing dangerous burnouts and donuts in residential streets. One incident reportedly involved a vehicle performing donuts within metres of a pedestrian walking with a young child.

Despite numerous reports being made to QPS, calling Emergency 000 and the dedicated HOONline the communities reports to Police have not been actioned. Residents are providing Police with all details relating to the offences, including addresses where offending vehicles are parking up day and night. There is growing frustration within the community that dangerous offenders continue to operate without consequence while residents are left feeling unsafe in their own neighbourhoods.

Two pedestrians and one driver have lost their lives at the hands of speeding hoons in Hervey Bay over the past two years. There has been no increased Police enforcement in Hervey Bay with each tragic loss of life. The situation has reached a point where many residents fear it is only a matter of time before more innocent people simply going about their daily activities, will be injured or killed.

The lack of adequate police presence and timely intervention exacerbates the problem, fueling a sense of insecurity among residents. We need our law enforcement to step up and protect us from these reckless drivers who disregard the safety and peace of our community.

A more robust police response can significantly deter this dangerous behaviour. We propose increased patrolling in known hotspots throughout Point Vernon and Hervey Bay, especially during evenings and weekends when such activities are rampant. Additionally, advanced technology, such as speed cameras and sound detection systems, can also play a critical role in monitoring and curbing hooning activities.

We urge the local and state government and law enforcement agencies to prioritise the safety of our residents by implementing these measures promptly. Every delay only risks further incidents and potential tragedies. It's time to reclaim our streets and ensure they are safe for all residents and families.

Sign this petition if you believe in making Point Vernon and Hervey Bay safer communities and support the call for increased police action against dangerous driving. Let's work together to bring peace back to our neighborhoods.
