Navigating healthcare as a disabled driver in the UK presents unique challenges. Only 3% of hospital parking bays are designated as accessible, yet 35–45% of patients require these spaces due to mobility needs. These numbers mean that for each accessible bay, there is an overwhelming demand by 18–25 patients, significantly below the 5% minimum mandated by NHS standards and the Equality Act 2010.

My personal struggles highlight this issue. As a disabled person, dropping off someone isn't an option. I require sufficient time to safely park and unload my wheelchair, particularly when accompanying my parents to their medical appointments. To complicate matters, my husband, Scott, is also disabled and often needs to push my wheelchair. When no accessible bays are available, we endure long and painful walks, preventing me from accompanying Scott when he requires my support.

This reality is faced by countless other patients who struggle to access healthcare facilities that should be readily available and accommodating.

Therefore, we urgently call for:

1. An increase of accessible parking bays to at least 5% of total parking spaces, meeting NHS and Equality Act standards.
2. Strategic placement of these bays near main entrances and outpatient services to ensure ease of access.
3. Continued free parking for Blue Badge holders to protect the independence and dignity of disabled individuals.

These changes will significantly impact the quality of healthcare access for disabled patients, ensuring they have the necessary support and proximity when attending crucial medical appointments. Let's stand together to advocate for this essential improvement.
