Incorporate Student Access to Microwaves

Incorporate Student Access to Microwaves
The issue
Imagine sitting down on a cold winter day, opening your lunchbox, and finding yesterday’s chicken and rice still chilled and unappetising. This is the reality for many students who bring food from home but have no way of heating it up, leaving them either to eat cold meals or rely on the tuckshop, which is expensive and doesn’t always cater to cultural, allergy, or medical needs. Warm food matters: research shows it improves digestion, circulation, and energy, while cold food tastes worse because low temperatures dull our taste buds and aroma. Heated meals are also safer, more enjoyable, and help students concentrate better in class.
Allowing microwave access would support fairness and inclusion, giving all students the chance to enjoy safe, suitable meals while also reducing packaging waste from daily tuckshop use. It would save families hundreds if not thousands each year compared to buying lunch every day. With simple rules like short time limits, cleaning up after use, and no lingering in the microwave area, access can be managed smoothly and responsibly. A small change like this would bring proven benefits, comfort, and inclusivity to our community.
