Incorporate Narcan Training and Accessibility within the Airline Industry
The Issue
In memory of the dozens of dear friends and loved ones I've lost to the fentanyl epidemic, I'm compelled to advocate for a cause deeply personal to me. Fatal drug overdoses involving synthetic opioids such as fentanyl have been on a significant rise in the United States. Over 70% of overdose deaths are caused by opioids in general, and a growing number of these instances are due to synthetic substances like fentanyl [CDC]. Narcan (naloxone), a lifesaving drug, can reverse an opioid overdose when administered timely and properly.
However, accessibility and a lack of training are ongoing obstacles. In the confined space of an airplane, someone suffering an overdose might not receive the immediate help they need, which can make a difference between life and death. Therefore, I propose that commercial airlines take steps to train their crews in administering Narcan in the event of an overdose while in flight. This proactive measure could prevent tragedies and add an essential layer of safety.
Let's encourage aviation institutions and authorities to make Narcan training mandatory and have Narcan accessible on all aircraft, potentially saving countless lives. Through this effort, we may ensure that no family has to suffer the loss of a loved one due to a preventable overdose. Please sign this petition to show your support and help promote this vital change.
