Dear Members of the Fair Lawn Board of Education and Dr. Rui Dionisio
Superintendent of Schools,
We, the undersigned parents, students, and members of the Fair Lawn community, respectfully request the recognition and inclusion of Jewish American Heritage Month (JAHM) as part of the school curriculum in all Fair Lawn schools as it's done in many school districts including NYC
https://www.schools.nyc.gov/learning/subjects/social-studies/jewish-american-heritage-month
JAHM is a federally recognized celebration that takes place every year in May and provides an important opportunity to educate students about the rich cultural contributions of Jewish Americans throughout history.
What Jewish American Heritage Month (JAHM) is:
- A national, month-long celebration that takes place every May.
- It was first established as Jewish American Heritage Week in 1980 by President Jimmy Carter and later extended to the entire month of May by President George W. Bush in 2006.
- The month serves to highlight Jewish contributions to American culture, history, and society.
- It is also a time to counter antisemitism through education and increased awareness.
Jewish Americans have played a vital role in shaping the history, culture, and society of the United States, contributing to fields ranging from science and the arts to politics, business, and social justice.
Despite its significance, JAHM has yet to be incorporated into the curriculum of Fair Lawn schools.
In recent years, we have witnessed a concerning rise in anti-Semitic incidents and sentiments across the United States. According to the Anti-Defamation League's annual audit, anti-Semitic incidents reached an all-time high in 2022, with over 2,700 cases reported. Education and awareness are crucial in combating these prejudices and promoting understanding and acceptance.
Incorporating Jewish American Heritage Month into the school curriculum would not only acknowledge the tremendous contributions Jewish Americans have made but also promote diversity and inclusivity within our community. Students will benefit from a more comprehensive understanding of American history, one that includes diverse perspectives and experiences.
SIGN & SHARE this petition to show your support for a diverse and inclusive education that honors Jewish American Heritage Month in our schools.
