Incorporate Indigenous Knowledge and Inclusion Into The Early Years Curriculum

The Issue

Canada's history has taken away the Indigenous culture. We, as a society, need to work towards integrating the Indigenous culture, history, and ways of knowing back into Canada, and honour the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action. There is much to do on the path to reconciliation, but an important step now is incorporating Indigenous culture and inclusion into the early years curriculum. Educators should be decolonizing and Indigenizing their teaching practices and our young children should be provided with opportunities to embrace and celebrate Indigenous ways of knowing. Early childhood centres and classrooms need to be environments that foster well-being and inclusion and should be working to mend the distrust that racial discrimination has created for Indigenous people and the schooling system. Our current Early Years curriculum needs to incorporate Indigenous knowledge.

Research indicates that by implementing this change into the curriculum, we can support Indigenous communities and work towards genuine Truth and Reconciliation. We need to consider the importance of the Ontario Ministry of Education formally integrating Indigenous culture and history into the current Early Years curriculum to support the changes necessary to facilitate awareness, understanding, and inclusion in education environments. Canada's residential schools lasted over one hundred years... let's not take that long to make it right.
