Incorporate Fire Basics Classes in Los Angeles Unified Schools

Incorporate Fire Basics Classes in Los Angeles Unified Schools
The Issue
I have always dreamed of becoming a firefighter. It's not just a job for me; it's a calling—a way to serve my community and be there for people in their most vulnerable moments. However, my high school does not offer any courses or classes that teach the basics of fire safety and firefighting skills. This is a huge missed opportunity not just for myself, but for many other students who are passionate about pursuing a career in firefighting.
Fire basics courses could provide students with foundational knowledge about fire safety, prevention techniques, and basic firefighting skills. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, there are over 1.1 million firefighters in the United States, and the demand for them is expected to grow by 5% over the next decade. Firefighting is a critical role in society, and we should encourage more students to pursue this career path by offering them educational courses that cover the basics and potentially provide a certification upon completion.
Thankfully, there are many schools across the nation that have successfully implemented similar programs with great success, producing students who are better prepared for careers in firefighting and emergency services. Implementing a fire basics curriculum, complete with both theoretical and hands-on training, would not only prepare future firefighters but also provide essential life skills to all students.
In tandem with implementing fire basics classes, I believe it is essential to have policies in place that ensure the focus of these classes is maintained by creating environments free of distractions including phones. This would enable an engaging and comprehensive learning experience without succumbing to the pitfalls of digital distractions.
Please sign this petition to advocate for incorporating a Fire Basics class in schools across the nation, allowing students to pursue their dreams of becoming firefighters while equipping them with crucial life skills. Your support could help pave the way for future first responders, making our communities safer and more resilient.
