Incorporate Disaster Preparedness Activities in TSD

Incorporate Disaster Preparedness Activities in TSD
The Issue
Incorporate Natural Disaster Preparedness Activities in Tahoma School District's Curriculum.
Washington State, located directly over a fault line, faces a higher risk of earthquakes and tsunamis. Despite this, students in Tahoma School District (TSD) do not have the preparation skills for disaster-related events outside of school. TSD's current Emergency Procedures (EP) are limited.
Though EP are introduced at the start of the school year, the focus is on procedures rather than practical skills. As a TSD student myself, I've experienced the limitations of our current system. It's crucial that we teach students how to prepare for disasters outside of school to ensure their safety.
Incorporating engaging activities and games is an effective way for students to learn disaster preparedness. Resources like Ready.gov offer interactive games and videos covering essential skills, making them perfect additions to the curriculum.
Earthquakes pose a significant threat to Washington State. While we've been fortunate to avoid a major earthquake thus far, it's a matter of when, not if. We can't afford to be caught off-guard.
For TSD to become future-ready, these readily available resources must be incorporated into the curriculum. Students need to acquire practical skills, not just learn procedures. Sign this petition to call on Tahoma School District to prioritize natural disaster preparedness activities and ensure the safety of our students.
