The Issue

I cannot help but express my concern - personal and heartfelt - as a parent of children who cherish the euphoria they find in diving into the deep end of our current swimming pool in Caerphilly. It’s a joy that radiates their faces, infusing life and happiness into their childhood experiences. Now, the thought of having this invaluable happiness erased from their lives is beyond devastating.

Current plans for our new £33 million leisure centre, regrettably, leave out a deep end in the swimming pool. The absence of this treasured portion of the pool would not only strip our youngest generation of a beloved activity, but also affect swimming lessons and advanced training procedures, as a deep end is essential for divers and swimmers to build confidence and improve their skills.

Research suggests that swimming pools with varying depths, including a deep end, accommodate a wider range of activities and skill levels, thus promoting inclusivity (source: International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education). Therefore, the addition of a deep end is not only a matter of personal preference, it's a crucial aspect of a comprehensive and versatile swimming facility.

We call on the Caerphilly Council to reconsider their current plans, tune into the voice of their community, and modify the design of the new leisure centre to include a deep end in the swimming pool. It is an appeal wrap up in love, childhood joy, comprehensive learning, and the spirit of inclusivity. Sign this petition to expand the smiles on our children's faces and the richness of their experiences.
