Inconvenience of the MBTA
Inconvenience of the MBTA
The Issue
People in Boston heavily rely on the MBTA , especially subways to get around the city or even outside the city, though there’s one major issue. Stations consistently get shut down for an extended period of time off, which can be a disadvantage for the people who rely on the MBTA to get around. For example, the Green line, Orange line, and Red line are the most used MBTA subway lines people use, those lines were shut down for at least a week. This is a disadvantage for people because this is how people get to work, school, or important events, people will be late to their destination. Not only that, there’s a number of subways that become disabled , holding up passengers longer than they should, causing major crowds at one station. This mostly happens towards the green line, and occasionally the red line.
Due to the constant shut down on the subways stations, people are going to be upset because they have to find an alternative way to get to where they need and it may be a longer route to get there. The constant disabled trains also leave people unhappy, being held up for at least 10 minutes because a train stopped working. Of course it’s okay for a train to stop working randomly, but this is happening too often. Not only that, the MBTA is supposed to be reliable. As mentioned, people use the MBTA on a daily basis, and they rely on it because it is how people get around Boston. Having it consistently getting shut down or disabled can lead people to stop using the MBTA because they no longer depend on the MBTA to get around and find another way to get to their destination.
This issue affects everyone who uses the MBTA as the main usage of transportation. People in Boston Public School, People who work in Boston, or people who use it just to get around the city. During December of 2025, the Green line was shut down between Babcock street to North Station. This was during the time where students are getting ready for winter break and this is the most used line for students. Though shuttle buses were provided, the E line, where it’s around Boston Latin School is, didn't provide it because of the 39 buses, which can only hold so much. Earlier this year, the Orange line shut down for more than a week from back bay to forest hills, which is used by students a lot.
There is one possible solution that could make the MBTA more convenient. Invest more money. Other trains suddenly become disabled during a ride and situations where stations will have to be shut down. Investing money could help fix the trains to prevent it from being disabled and have the track last longer to have less maintenance since both of them are the issue for making it less convenient.
The MBTA is supposed to give the best service to people who use it. They should give the best service when stations are shuttered down for a bit. In return, we continue to use and support the MBTA because of the service they’re providing. The taxes that people pay goes towards the MBTA. We should get the best service you can offer us. We also pay the fares and give it business, which can also help fund the MBTA to improve their tracks, and would have to work to improve the tracks and subway to have people use the MBTA.
