The issue

Starting from 1 July 2026, households in New South Wales, South Australia, Queensland, and Victoria will be eligible for three hours of free electricity each day due to an oversupply of solar energy in their grids.

This initiative, known as the "Solar Sharer Offer" (SSO), comes with specific prerequisites, terms, and conditions.
Households in Western Australia and the Northern Territory will join this initiative in 2027, further expanding its positive impact.

This initiative is perfectly sense, as it makes use of excess energy and provides significant savings to Australian households.
The opportunity for free electricity is a fantastic benefit for those at home during the day, allowing households to access up to 24 kWh of free power daily.
This energy can be used for tasks such as washing and drying clothes, washing dishes, heating or cooling homes, charging batteries, and powering electric banks, including Electric Vehicles.

There are no plans to include Tasmania in this initiative or any program providing free electricity at all.
Tasmanians are at the mercy of corporations, offering a mere 3 hours per month of free electricity.
3 hours a day vs 3 hours a month, it is a massive inequity for Tasmanians.

Average domestic solar production in Tasmania is lower than that of the mainland states. However, Tasmania proudly generates 100% of its energy from renewable sources, primarily utilising hydroelectric and wind power.

Tasmania produces 30 GWh of electricity daily and consumes 25–30 GWh daily, including 2.3 TWh trade to the mainland annually.
There are 259,302 houses in Tasmania, with 230,000 being occupied.
The average daily energy consumption per household is 24 kWh.
Of the 30 GWh of clean energy produced daily, Tasmanians use 5.6 GWh, while the remaining energy is consumed by businesses, governments and trade.

Tasmania's substantial contribution to the nation’s energy infrastructure sets an international benchmark for renewable energy.
This raises an important question: Is it fair that Tasmania is excluded from the benefits of free electricity despite contributing clean energy to the national grid?

Tasmania’s surplus of clean energy should translate into real benefits for its residents, specifically access to free electricity in line with what households in the mainland states will enjoy. This achievement of energy independence should benefit all Tasmanians.
We urge our government officials and energy policymakers to reconsider and extend the same privilege of daily free electricity to the people of Tasmania.

This initiative will embody fairness and recognise Tasmania's essential role in Australia’s renewable energy landscape.
By supporting this petition, you advocate for a fair and balanced energy policy that honours our state’s contributions and affirms every Tasmanian’s right to equitable energy benefits.

Everyone, please sign this petition to demonstrate that we deserve equal access to the benefits of free electricity, just as we share our resources.

To all Tasmanian Policymakers, regardless of whether you're in the ALP, LNP, Independents or the One Nation Party, you are a proud Tasmanian, and the equity of all Tasmanians is your responsibility. Please prioritise and make it a success in Canberra.
