The Issue

We are writing to address a matter of linguistic representation that impacts a significant portion of the population in Northern Ghana thus five Northern regions with over 6 million population. As concerned citizens and advocates for linguistic diversity as communication is a great tool for uniform development and when done properly joins the efforts in eliminating poverty in Northern Ghana, which data has shown has the poorest districts in the country, we are urging the collaboration of [Electricity Company of Ghana, Minsitry of Health, MTN, National Communications Authority, Vodafone, Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Ministry of Information, to consider an important aspect of communication accessibility for the Northern Ghanaian community.

The current practice and seemingly colonial choice of utilizing the Hausa language as a representative for Northern Ghanaian languages in call centers and communication campaigns if true, falls short of capturing the rich linguistic diversity inherent in the 5 regions with over 20 languages. While acknowledging the efforts to accommodate linguistic variations, the prevalence of the Hausa language fails to fully represent the mosaic of languages spoken in Northern Ghana, particularly neglecting the Mole-Dagbani languages, the largest after Akan.

I am petitioning for the inclusion and promotion of the Mole-Dagbani languages within your communication services. By incorporating these languages alongside the existing communication protocols, we can ensure a more inclusive and representative platform for all Northern Ghanaian communities, fostering a sense of belonging and accessibility in essential services.

It's essential to recognize that linguistic diversity not only preserves cultural heritage but also facilitates effective communication, ensuring that no community is left behind in accessing vital services provided by your esteemed organizations.

We kindly request a dialogue or meeting to discuss strategies and implementation plans for the integration of Northern Ghanaian languages in your call centers and communication campaigns. We believe that our collective efforts can pave the way for a more inclusive and culturally sensitive approach in serving the diverse populace of Northern Ghana, which are border enclaves and windows into Ghana’s diverse culture and richness of resources.

Thank you for your attention to this matter. We are hopeful for a positive response and an opportunity to collaborate for the benefit of our community.
