The Issue
When I look at emojis, I see a glaring gap in representation for our vibrant and diverse LGBTQIA+ community. Currently, there are only two flags that appear—the trans flag and a mere rainbow—without acknowledgment of the pride flag or other important representations. This limited selection doesn't reflect the diversity of our community, and it certainly doesn’t resonate with the inclusivity we strive for every day.
The expansion of LGBTQIA+ emoji flags is essential not only for visibility but also for validation. Emojis are more than just symbols; they are the language millions of people use to express themselves every day. Whether it’s a bisexual, pansexual, or the communal pride flag, each represents a significant part of our identities and alliances. The lack of these emojis means the omission of our stories and experiences from everyday digital conversations.
Globally, the LGBTQIA+ community is expansive and diverse. According to a Gallup poll, around 5.6% of U.S. adults identify as LGBTQ, a figure that’s steadily rising as younger generations are more visible and open about their affiliations. Imagine the impact that could be made if platforms like Apple, Android, and others led the way by providing a more inclusive range of emoji flags to represent our community fully.
According to Emojipedia, emojis are approved by the Unicode Consortium. Introducing more LGBTQIA+ flags into the emoji lexicon should be a straightforward process, similar to adding other symbols or flags representative of groups across the globe. By recognizing our flags in this universal digital language, these platforms can foster a sense of community and belonging amongst users who have historically been underrepresented.
We call upon the Unicode Consortium, Apple, Android, and other tech companies to embrace diversity in emoji offerings by including important LGBTQIA+ flags. Representation matters in every facet of life, and the inclusion of more flags in emojis would mark a huge step toward recognition and equity for all members of our community.
Let's stand together to push for a broader representation of our community in global digital dialogues. Sign this petition to request the inclusion of more LGBTQIA+ flags in popular communication platforms today.
