We are thrilled to share a historic and long-awaited milestone for the lipedema community.
Dr. Karen Herbst has confirmed online today (June 18, 2026), that ICD-10 codes for lipedema have officially been accepted and are scheduled to go into effect in October 2027. This marks a transformational step forward in recognition, diagnosis, treatment access, and research for lipedema.
This achievement did not happen overnight. It is the result of years of persistent advocacy, clinical expertise, and unwavering commitment. We extend our deepest gratitude and admiration to the physicians and experts who worked tirelessly to research, develop, present, and refine these codes through multiple submissions to the CDC. Your dedication has created a lasting impact for patients everywhere.
We also want to thank every single member of this community who played a role...whether you signed this Change.org petition, submitted public comments to the CDC, shared your story, or supported this effort in any way. Collective voices and patient, provider, and caregiver advocacy truly made a difference.
As we look ahead, preparation is key. The American Lipedema Association's Education Lead has been actively developing clear, practical guidance for patients on what to do once these codes take effect. This will include steps to help update medical records and ensure healthcare providers are aware of and using the new codes appropriately. Please stay tuned! We will be sharing these resources via email and on our website as we get closer to the October 2027 implementation date.
As shared by Dr. Herbst and Advanced Lipedema Treatment:
"Progress like this happens because of years of advocacy, research, and the voices of patients around the world. While there is still work ahead, this is such a meaningful advancement for the future of lipedema care."
Today, we celebrate progress. Tomorrow, we continue the work, together.
With gratitude and determination,
The American Lipedema Association
