The Issue

As a passionate and dedicated hammer thrower from Bartlesville, Oklahoma, I find myself and fellow athletes at a disadvantage. This stems from the fact that hammer throwing is not recognized as a legal event in the high school track and field in Oklahoma. Our omission from such valuable athletic development leaves us trailing behind our fellow athletes from other states.

In the United States, high school athletic programs play a crucial role in nurturing the potential of our youth. They empower them with skills, foster camaraderie, and encourage good sportsmanship. Sports such as hammer throwing, which require immense skill, concentration, and physical prowess, are important for fostering well-rounded athletes.

Yet, the Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association (OSSAA) currently does not recognize the hammer throw as a legal event. This puts Oklahoma student-athletes at a disadvantage, not only in terms of equitable opportunities for athletic development but also in national ranking.

The addition of the hammer throw in Oklahoma high school track and field competitions will align our state's athletic programs with those of other states, such as Rhode Island, who have included the hammer throw in their high school competitions since 1969 (source: National Federation of State High School Associations).

As such, this petition strongly urges the OSSAA to reconsider its current stance and include the hammer throw as a recognized event in high school track and field. It's time to ensure that all Oklahoma student-athletes have an opportunity to flourish and shine on both local and national stages. Join us in making the necessary strides to achieve athletic equity in our local schools; sign this petition today.
