Include Compound Archery in the Olympic Games

The Issue

Compound Archery is a physical, mentally demanding, and most importantly, universally accessible sport. Attend an archery event and you will see a microcosm of the world: all ages, all backgrounds, united in a simple pursuit. Yet, this sport that embodies so much of the Olympic spirit is absent from the Games.

Compound archery is a modern event that develops concentration, precision, and patience. It brings together participants from 5 to 85 years old, a breadth virtually unmatched in other sports. The International Archery Federation (World Archery) recognizes it as one of their official disciplines and conducts global competitions annually. However, it remains unrecognized by the Olympic committee despite clamor from international enthusiasts including thousands of participants from more than 80 countries who partake in the World Archery Championships annually [source: World Archery].

This exclusion is not only a disservice to the athletes in this discipline, but it narrows the athletic diversity the Olympics are known to uphold. By including compound archery in the Olympic Games, we can expand the inclusivity of the biggest international sporting event. We can give a platform to an exciting and demanding sport, and honor those talented athletes who have a commitment to compound archery.

The spirit of the Olympics is 'Citius, Altius, Fortius' - 'Faster, Higher, Stronger'. We ask the Olympic committee to live up to this creed and consider making our sport - compound archery - a part of its celebrated roster. Sign this petition to support the inclusion of compound archery in the Olympic Games!
