Include Chronic Health Conditions under Whaikaha - Ministry of Disabled People

The issue

Currently conditions that fall classified as LTC (long term conditions) are not included under Whaikaha. Inequalities in service provision and care was recently identified as a significant problem in New Zealand’s treatment of Disabled People as a signatory of UNCRPD.

This means that many severely disabled people are not eligible Enabling Good Lives or Individualised Funding. In practice this results is a huge inequalities in care. People who desperately need services including home help, assistance with food preparation and personal care (assistance showering) are not able to access these services.

A fragmented care service with very limited funding controls access to services for people with Long Term and Chronic Health Conditions. Those who live with these conditions are not able to access services through organisations that cater for disabled people.

LTC include cancers, Functional Neurological Disorder, POTS syndrome, mental health conditions, chronic pain, diabetes and many other disabling conditions. Representatives from the ME/CFS community have already taken this issue to parliament but the problem is far greater.
