The Issue

Last night, my partner's family faced a heartbreaking loss. Their beloved cat was tragically hit by a vehicle, and instead of stopping to help, the driver callously drove away, leaving the poor cat to suffer alone and eventually die. This cat was not just a pet; it was a cherished family member.

In the UK, our pets hold a special place in our lives and hearts, especially dogs and cats. However, there's a glaring oversight in our laws: while dogs are protected under the Road Traffic Act 1988, cats are not. This means that if a driver hits a dog, they are legally required to report it, but hitting a cat carries no such obligation. This is an unacceptable disparity that needs to be corrected.

According to the PDSA, 51% of UK households own a pet, and cats make up a significant portion of these beloved companions. Yet, these animals, which provide comfort, companionship, and joy, are not given the legal protections they deserve when involved in traffic incidents. The current legislation fails to acknowledge cats as the significant members of our families that they are.

It's time for change. We need to amend the Road Traffic Act 1988 to include cats. By doing so, we recognize their value and importance in our families and communities. Such an amendment would ensure that drivers are held accountable for their actions, promoting responsibility and care on our roads.

Sign this petition to urge lawmakers to revise the Road Traffic Act and give cats the legal protection they deserve. By supporting this change, we can foster a more compassionate society that honors all our beloved pets.
