Include Asian American History in Colorado's K-12 Education Curriculum

Include Asian American History in Colorado's K-12 Education Curriculum
The Issue
In the wake of rising anti-Asian hate crimes throughout the United States, it has become increasingly clear that a lack of understanding and empathy towards Asian Americans is contributing to this disturbing trend. This issue hits close to home for me, as I have witnessed fellow Americans being targeted solely because of their Asian heritage. The elderly, who should be respected and protected, have been victims of brutal attacks and even murder.
The events that unfolded in 2020 continue into 2021 and beyond, serving as a stark reminder that ignorance breeds fear and hatred. To combat this problem at its root cause - ignorance - we must educate our children about the rich history and contributions of Asian Americans to our society.
Despite making up nearly 6% of the U.S population (U.S Census Bureau), Asian American history is often overlooked or minimized in school curriculums. In Colorado specifically, there is no requirement for K-12 schools to teach students about the diverse histories and cultures within our nation.
By including comprehensive lessons on Asian American history in Colorado's K-12 curriculum, we can foster understanding among different ethnic groups from an early age. This will not only enrich our children's education but also contribute significantly towards creating a more inclusive society where everyone feels valued and respected.
Let us take action now by urging the Colorado State Board of Education and Commissioner Cordova to include lessons on Asian American history in their curriculum for all grades from Kindergarten through high school (K-12). Sign this petition today so that together we can create a better future for all Coloradans.
