Include animals and trees under legal term of public
The Issue
Growing up in Bengaluru, I was always captivated by the beauty of our local parks, the chirping of urban birds, and the joy that our furry friends brought to our lives. Over time, I've realized how crucial it is to protect these invaluable components of our community. Unfortunately, despite their significant roles, they lack legal recognition and protection, which leaves them vulnerable to harm and neglect.
Imagine walking through a park devoid of birdsong, or a neighborhood without the comforting presence of trees providing shade and clean air. In many urban areas, wildlife and greenery are not only essential for environmental health but also enhance our quality of life. Yet, they are too often overlooked when it comes to legal rights and protections.
This petition seeks to redefine 'public' in our legal terms to include trees, dogs, cats, and urban birds. By doing so, we can extend the same rights that people have to these indispensable members of our community. This change would allow better legal protection for them, making it possible to advocate more effectively against their mistreatment and ensure their presence in urban planning solutions.
There are precedents in places like Switzerland, where animals have been granted certain rights to ensure their wellbeing. Moreover, research shows that biodiversity contributes to human happiness, reduces stress, and improves mental health.
Together, we can influence policy-makers to recognize the importance of inclusive community frameworks that account for both human and non-human inhabitants. Doing so will pave the way for nurturing environments where all lives are respected and valued.
Please sign this petition to urge local governments and policymakers to amend the legal definition of 'public' to include trees, dogs, cats, and urban birds, ensuring they receive the protection and care they deserve. Let's work together to create harmonious environments that protect and sustain all life.
