Include a plant based milk option in UK Nursery & School Milk Schemes

Include a plant based milk option in UK Nursery & School Milk Schemes
The Issue
The Nursery Milk Scheme and School Milk subsidy Scheme, are significant initiatives operated by the Nursery Milk Reimbursement Unit (NMRU) & The Rural Payments Agency (RPA) on behalf of the Department of Health and Social Care and the Welsh Government, provides children in approved childcare settings with a third of a pint of milk to support their growth and development. However, the current scheme solely includes cow's milk, neglecting the dietary needs of children who are allergic to cow's milk or living in families following a plant-based diet due to health, ethical, or environmental reasons.
With a growing number of families in the UK choosing plant-based diets and a rise in awareness about dairy allergies among children, it is essential for the Nursery Milk Scheme & School Milk Subsidy Scheme to be inclusive and reflect the diverse dietary choices of today's families. According to the Vegan Society, the UK has seen a rapid increase in the number of vegans, doubling between 2014 and 2019. Moreover, studies published in the Journal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition highlight that cow's milk allergy is one of the most common food allergies in early childhood, affecting up to 3% of children.
Implementing a plant milk option helps promote inclusivity and ensures that all children can benefit from the Nursery Milk Scheme & School Milk Subsidy Scheme. Various plant-based alternatives, like fortified soy, almond, or oat milk, offer comparable nutritional benefits to cow's milk and are widely available. The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests that fortified plant milks can be appropriate substitutes for dairy when they are incorporated properly into a child's diet.
We urge the UK government and the stakeholders of the Nursery Milk Scheme & School Milk Subsidy Scheme to expand their offerings to include plant milk options, addressing dietary restrictions and preferences of today's diverse society. Such a move aligns with the UK’s broader commitment towards environmental sustainability and public health improvement.
By signing this petition, you can support a necessary change that reflects the evolving dietary landscapes of families in the UK. Let us work towards a scheme that serves the needs of all children, ensuring no child is left out due to their dietary needs or family choices. Please sign and share this petition to bring about this important, inclusive change.
