Incentivize Social Enterprises in Nigeria

The Issue

As social entrepreneurs we are deeply concerned about the growing number of social entrepreneurial activities in our country. Despite their potential to drive economic growth and social change, these enterprises are often hampered by excessive taxation and bureaucratic bottlenecks.

Nigeria is witnessing an influx of social enterprises - businesses with a dual goal of making profit and creating positive societal impact. Yet, our current system does not provide adequate support for these ventures. Instead, they are subject to stringent tax regulations and cumbersome administrative procedures that hinder their progress.

According to the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM), Nigeria has one of the highest rates of early-stage entrepreneurial activity in Africa. However, without proper incentives for these socially-oriented businesses, we risk stifling innovation and hindering our nation's development.

We urge the Nigerian government to recognize the value that social enterprises bring to our society. We call upon them to implement policies that incentivize such ventures – through tax breaks or other forms of financial support – thereby fostering an environment where they can thrive.
