The Issue

The taxi industry has been the backbone of community transportation, offering reliable services for decades. However, in recent times, local private hire taxi firms have been struggling significantly. As a resident and frequent user of these services, I've witnessed firsthand how the rise of global ride-hailing giants like Uber and Bolt has detrimentally impacted our cherished local taxi companies. The allure of these apps is undeniable, providing drivers with the flexibility to switch between platforms. This ability to choose and shift allegiances seamlessly has led to a decrease in loyalty to local taxi firms, leaving these businesses vulnerable and struggling to stay afloat.

Local firms have always prioritized personalized services, knowing their repeat customers and understanding the unique requirements of the community. They are not just a means of transportation but a vital part of our social fabric. However, with drivers gravitating towards global platforms for incentives and remuneration, these local businesses face an uncertain future. As these drivers leave, clients are left with limited options and the personal touch we value so much is slowly eroding.

Consider this: each time a driver chooses to stay with Uber or Bolt over a local taxi firm, community funds flow outwards, diluting the local economy. Supporting local firms means supporting our neighbours, our schools, and our community projects. It's maintaining the character and individuality of our town, rather than a blanket service that doesn't understand our needs.

I propose that incentives be introduced for drivers who choose to remain loyal to their local private hire firms. This could take the form of tax benefits, subsidies, or even exclusive local contracts for businesses that align with the goals of supporting the local economy. These measures would help reinforce the value of local connections and ensure the survival of our cherished taxi firms.

We need to galvanize now, before it's too late. Support our local taxi industry by signing this petition to urge our local councils to provide these incentives, keep our economy robust, and preserve the integrity of our community. Let's support our local businesses and ensure they thrive alongside, rather than be overshadowed by, global giants. Please sign and share this petition today.
