In support of the Medical Training (Prioritisation) Bill

In support of the Medical Training (Prioritisation) Bill
The Issue
We are asking that the noble peers of the House of Lords consider passing the Medical Training (Prioritisation) Bill without amendments.
Entering medical training has become harder and harder every year, with an estimated 4 applications for each specialty training post. When multiple applications are taken into account, even tradionally less competitive specialties like psychiatry have competition ratios of more than 22:1!
There is no longer any certainty that a UK medical graduate is able to secure a training place after they complete the 2 year Foundation Programme, especially given the rise of applications from overseas trained candidates.
Given that the number of international medical graduate applications has been estimated to have reached more than 50,000- more than double the number of applications from UK graduates- many UK doctors will be forced to seek uncertain employment abroad or quit medicine altogether.
We believe that this is unacceptable, given that it costs the British taxpayers roughly £220,000 to train a UK medical graduate. British citizens and the government must see a return given their substantial investment- not a loss, as many UK doctors will soon be forced to apply for benefits.
We believe that the Medical Training (Prioritisation) Bill can make a real difference to the lives of both patients and doctors, given that those in prioritised groups are more likely to stay in the UK long term, if they are given the oppotunity to enter NHS training and help even more patients.
We believe that every amendment to the Medical Training (Prioritisation) Bill will result in more unecessary delay. More delay will result in another year of home grown doctors facing unemployment- doctors for whom NHS training may be the only possible path to career progression if they are unable to relocate abroad.
We believe that without urgent change, the average bright British medical graduate will be left with nothing but £78,000 of student loan repayments, broken dreams and uncertainty.
We therefore humbly ask the government to ensure that the Medical Training (Prioritisation) Bill is passed without amendments. Doing so will ensure that another generation of UK graduates isn’t lost to unemployment, the private sector or other countries.
