In Loving Memory of Nacho: Make Roads Safer for Cats

Saturday 13/12/2025  at 6:30 PM, my partner and I faced a devastating tragedy. Our beloved rescue cat, who had been a cherished member of our family for nearly two years, was hit by a car. The driver didn't stop. The impact was catastrophic—her eye socket was completely removed, and she lay there bleeding, unable to move at all.  Ultimately succumbing to her injuries. We are absolutely heartbroken, not just for our loss, but for the harsh reality that in our society, the life of a cat on the road seems dispensable and gets Ignored.

Our cat was more than a pet; she was family. The casual disregard shown by the driver who didn’t stop reveals a gap in current road safety laws. Right now, there are laws that require drivers to stop for dogs and other larger animals, but inexplicably, this does not extend to cats. It’s time to change this.

In the UK, approximately 230,000 cats are run over each year. That also 230,000 families that are left distraught, coming to terms with their loss. The majority of these incidents go unreported because drivers aren't legally required to stop. This negligence results in untold suffering and loss for countless families every year. How many more personal stories of heartbreak must we endure before something is done?

We urge lawmakers to address this oversight by mandating that all drivers must stop immediately after hitting a cat. Introducing this simple yet impactful amendment to road safety laws will ensure that injured animals receive the urgent care they need and enable pet owners to receive closure instead of desperation.

This petition isn't just about justice for our beloved cat; it's about the broader call for compassion and responsibility on our roads. By signing this petition, you're supporting a change that recognises the significance of all life and helps prevent other families from experiencing similar needless heartache.

Please, join us in our fight for justice and help us call upon lawmakers to mandate that drivers stop immediately when they hit a cat. It is time to give cats on our roads the protection they deserve.

Thankyou for your Time.
