In honor of Hunter, help us urge L.A. County to install Guardrails.
The Issue
My name is Carla Langley, and I am the mother of Hunter Austin Langley. On February 4, 2026, my 16-year-old son lost his life on Malibu Canyon Road. In a matter of moments, my family was forever changed. Hunter was not only just a name or a statistic. He was a loving son, a twin brother, a brother of siblings, a proud uncle, an athlete, and a young man with an entire future ahead of him. Every day I live with the heartbreak of knowing that Hunter will never pursue his dreams.
Malibu Canyon Road is a well-travelled and scenic route, known for its winding paths and dramatic drop-offs. Yet, the absence of adequate guardrails makes it a perilous journey, especially for newer or less experienced drivers. It's incomprehensible that such a crucial safety measure is ignored in an area known for its beauty but also its danger.
With more than 35,000 vehicles using Malibu Canyon Road monthly, the need for guardrails becomes even more urgent. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, guardrails are estimated to reduce the severity of crashes and significantly decrease fatalities. Implementing these safety measures would drastically lower the chances of accidents like Hunter's happening to another family.
There is already proof of these measures saving lives in other high-risk areas. Roads with similar challenges across the U.S. have seen a marked decrease in fatal accidents after installing well-constructed guardrails.
The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and local authorities have the power to initiate change now. With the support of our community and concerned citizens, we can pressure them to prioritize public safety and install guardrails on Malibu Canyon Road before another tragedy occurs.
