"In God We Trust" is anachronistic. Replace with "In Truth We Trust."

"In God We Trust" is anachronistic. Replace with "In Truth We Trust."

The Issue

Like many, I find myself amidst the rising demographic of individuals who identify as atheists, agnostic, or religious nones within the United States. According to the CIA World Factbook, approximately 22.8% of Americans identified as atheists as of 2014. Today, that number is rising. Yet, atheists remain notably absent from Congress, our most palpable representation of democracy. Moreover, the notion of a 'God' continues to permeate our public spaces; it looms large on our currency and punctuates our songs and media. The phrase "In God We Trust" is anachronistic and misrepresentative.

Therefore, it is due time to change our official national motto from "In God We Trust" to "In Truth We Trust". This change calls for a more inclusive national identity, one which celebrates diversity of belief and questions absolute truths. We aspire to create an environment where all Americans, regardless of religious beliefs or lack thereof, feel equitably represented. A government's responsibility is towards its people, not endorsing a singular religious perspective.

The United States was supposed to be known for its commitment to truth. Isn't it high time our national motto reflected this commitment? I believe it is. Help ensure all Americans feel seen, valued and represented. I encourage you to join me by signing this petition, urging Congress to replace "In God We Trust" with "In Truth We Trust."

Update and Modernize National Lyrics and Motto:

Star Spangled Banner (Modern Lyrics):

O say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we'd hail at the twilight's last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight
O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there;
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the streets where we march for equality's claim,
Fighting oppression, we would stand strong and brave.
With voices united, our resolve never weak,
For justice, liberty for all, it's the future we seek.
Now the flag proudly flies in the morning's bright gleam,
A symbol of progress, of hope, and a dream:
O the star-spangled banner, long may it wave,
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

From the fields where we labor to the cities we build,
Through hardships endured, our spirit's fulfilled,
We stand up for truth, with compassion we lead,
For next generations, we plant every seed.
Their struggles gave rise to the freedoms we claim,
No force can divide us, no fear can inflame:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave,
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

O thus be it ever, when the people shall stand,
Together in hope, with our future in hand!
With peace as our goal and justice our aim,
We strive for a world where equality reigns.
For united we'll rise, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: "In truth is our trust!"
And the star-spangled banner in victory shall wave,
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
