Improving safety on Appin Road, NSW

The issue

Appin Road in New South Wales has become a critical safety concern for residents, pedestrians and motorists. As traffic volumes continue to increase, the risks associated with this busy arterial road have intensified, particularly for pedestrians who are required to cross the road daily to access parks, schools and community facilities.

There are currently limited safe pedestrian crossing points along Appin Road, despite its proximity to key community destinations such as Appin Public School, the skate park and local parks. The lack of controlled crossings places children, families and vulnerable pedestrians at unnecessary risk. Immediate action is required to install zebra crossings at appropriate locations to improve pedestrian safety and prevent further serious incidents.

In addition to pedestrian safety concerns, through-traffic continues to place significant pressure on Appin Road. A bypass for Appin has been discussed and included in broader transport and corridor planning investigations; however, it has not yet been approved or funded for construction. The absence of a bypass means heavy traffic continues to move through the town centre, increasing congestion, noise and safety risks for the local community.

Progressing the Appin bypass from investigation and planning into formal approval and delivery is essential to divert through-traffic away from residential and high-pedestrian areas. A bypass would reduce congestion on Appin Road, improve safety outcomes, and better support the long-term growth and liveability of Appin.

Road safety research consistently shows that pedestrian accidents are more common in areas without controlled crossings. Without meaningful upgrades, residents remain exposed to avoidable risks on a daily basis.

We call on Transport for NSW and the NSW Government to:

 • Commit to the installation of zebra crossings at key pedestrian locations along Appin Road; and

 • Advance the Appin bypass from planning investigations to approval and delivery as a priority infrastructure project.

By taking these steps, Appin Road can become safer, more functional and better suited to the needs of the community it serves.

Please sign this petition to support practical, evidence-based improvements to Appin Road and help protect the safety and wellbeing of Appin residents.
