Improving MCPS (Montgomery County Public Schools, MD) Lunches

The Issue

In Montgomery County Public Schools, there is an influx of criticism concerning school lunches ranging from quality of flavor to the nutrition values. Students should have the right to eat food without having to ponder the consequences of consuming it. With the support of MCPS students, we the Student Voice Society (associated with MCEA)  can advocate for change in our schools, such as:

- A change in the quality of nutrition provided
- A change in the types of food/meals provided
- The freshness of food provided
- A larger variety of food
- Transparency of where the food is made and/or sourced
- And, of course, EDIBLE FOOD.

We have requested the following information from Montgomery County:

  1. All materials that address, directly or indirectly, how MCPS determines the provider of lunches for their students.
  2. All policies, regulations, and contracts that MCPS relies upon, or otherwise uses currently in providing MCPS lunches.
  3. The specific allocation of MCPS funds towards providing school lunches.
  4. How money is allocated to each school in the distribution of food.
  5. The total profit and revenue made from the sale of school lunches across the county.

If we receive enough support, we are going to have Board of Education members come to visit Montgomery County schools and eat what we eat. The day will be random so we do not give schools time to prepare a meal that is actually satisfactory. This information alongside your support will allow us to construct a valid argument for change in our MCPS Lunches.
