Improvement to Commercial Trishaws Around Jonker Area - Noise, Route & Image
The Issue
The heart of Malacca city is a UNESCO Heritage site of historical buildings and culture dating from the 1500s. Through the years of colonizaton, the area of Jonker Malacca is a quintessentially unique cultural town, amongst them, hosts an interesting mode of transport of yesteryears called Trishaws.
For its uniqueness, the Trishaws are now tourist attraction sight seeing carts which ferries willing tourists around. Much to commercialisation, bad management and lack of finesse, the trishaws are distastefully decorated affixed with loud speakers and out-of-place plushies.
Today, as means of entertainment and tourist experiential journey, visitors pay to alight these trishaws. Music played through the trishaw speakers are exceptional loud and given the freedom, the trishaws have been inconsiderate with distasteful music. This form of disrespect, affects the peace and tranquility of Jonker. The noise pollution has made conversations impossible when any trishaw passes. And further to this, the inconsideration of trishaw paddlers have also added to disturbing the neighborhood past 12am with speakers played at full volume. This ignorance have disturbed the inhabitants’ rest time at Jonker.
Next to the noise pollution, trishaw pedallars also cycles against traffic along few roads, making it difficult for cars to drive through the already narrow roads. At times as well, drivers are shouted and intimated when the drivers are unable to give way.
While trishaws are meant to bring a positive tone to Malacca, the trishaws experience have left a bad taste in general.
Given that Malacca town is a UNESCO Heritage site with thousands of visiting tourists yearly, there is a need to upkeep international standards in every aspects of tourist experience.
In this light, this petition is raised to improve the circumstances but not to eradicate their significant existence to Malacca.
We humbly request that,
- Trishaws are to play music at a discernible volume where it does not disturb others
- Trishaws are to play music that is soothing
- Trishaws are disallowed to play music after 12am regardless day
- Trishaws are to follow the car traffic flow instead of going against the traffic.
- A revamp of tasteful design to the deco of the trishaws that reflects Malacca and Malaysia.
