Improved Student Parking Availability at Ardrey Kell High School

The Issue

On August 15th, 2023, the results of the second Ardrey Kell High School student parking lottery were released on the school website. In the first lottery, reserved for only twelfth-grade students, 361 students were provided a parking spot as a privilege to park on campus. In the second lottery, open to all students in grades 11-12, the remaining 103 parking spots were randomly assigned to junior and senior students. Less than 50 eleventh-grade students were assigned a parking spot. Overcrowding at Ardrey Kell High School has made it extremely difficult for every student in the upperclassmen body in need of a parking spot to receive one. With around only 450 spots to park on campus reserved for students, and around 1800 students in the upperclassmen body, it has become increasingly difficult to accommodate every eligible student's request for the privilege to park on campus.

Many students are denied this privilege. For students with Late Arrival and Early Release (open periods at the beginning and end of the school day as an opportunity to take non-Ardrey Kell coursework), a parking spot is a necessity as buses are not available for these students, and parents/guardians may have work in the day and may not be able to provide their children with transportation. Buses have also become overcrowded due to the increase in the Ardrey Kell High School population, so more parking spots assigned to students is a necessity to also decrease chaos on buses.

Ardrey Kell High School must take accountability and establish a procedure to allow all students in need of a space to park on campus to receive one. Whether that is building and plotting new spaces in open areas around campus, or allocating a different area for students to park in the nearby areas, some form of action must be taken to accomodate these requests. Every student in need of a space must have the ability to receive one. This action will satisfy the needs of every student and decrease the overcrowding on busses.

Please sign this petition if you believe change is necessary in the availability of parking at Ardrey Kell High School to satisfy the needs of every eligible student. Thank you so much.
