Improved security for Sillwood Terrace & Sillwood Road

Improved security for Sillwood Terrace & Sillwood Road
The Issue
Sillwood Terrace is a Mews situated in central Brighton. The walkway is home to +20 self-contained flats and provides rear access to at least 7 businesses. It is used by all residents to gain access to their flats and for refuse and commercial waste purposes for the businesses at ground level.
Unfortunately, there have been a series of incidents in recent months (if not years) that remain a major cause for concern to all stakeholders at Sillwood Terrace and the North end of Sillwood Road.
Sillwood Terrace is 43 metres deep and 2.7 metres wide but is poorly lit by a single street light. At the end of the walkway, it is partially concealed by large trees which make the walkway a perfect location for anti-social behaviour.
Within the last year alone there have been several cases of drug dealing, drug use, binge drinking, noise disruption at late hours, drunk and disorderly behaviour, fly-tipping, rummaging through commercial waste, urination & excreted matter, animal nuisance, people who are experiencing homelessness sleeping on doorsteps and much more.
There have already been too many instances where this sort of antisocial behaviour is taking place directly on our doorsteps. When these individuals are confronted or asked to leave, they feel empowered to stay put and carry on or leave momentarily only to return once nobody is watching.
According to https://www.adt.co.uk/crime-in-my-area, there have been 107 recorded reports of criminal/antisocial activity within a 1-mile radius of Sillwood Terrace in the last 3 months alone. In the last 12 months, there have been 397 incidents. This is more than x4 the amount in comparison to the UK average of 96 for the last 12 months.
Whilst the residents and businesses acknowledge that noise disruption will always be a part of living in the city centre, we also feel more can be done to establish better security along the walkway to deter these individuals from loitering in this area. We as residents have a right to be able to access our homes and businesses without constant inconvenience and fear.
Currently, anyone can gain access to Sillwood Terrace. To avoid this we would like to see a communal gate introduced. This way only those with a ventured interest in this area can access it. Hopefully, this will resolve the various issues we as a community have been experiencing for many years.
