Growing up in Utah, I was always surrounded by the awe-inspiring landscapes and diverse wildlife that make Utah a natural, national treasure. Utah's mountains, rivers, and forests offer a sanctuary not just for our unique native species, but for all of us who seek solace and rejuvenation in its wild embrace. This beauty is a vital part of the identity of Utahns, a beacon for those who come from afar to experience the tranquility and magnificence of nature.

However, a recent incident involving the Department of Wildlife Resources has drawn attention to an urgent need for better handling of wildlife management issues in our state. A series of poorly managed situations have put both wildlife and human lives at risk, undermining the delicate balance that is essential for thriving ecosystems. As someone deeply connected to Utah’s natural heritage, I am deeply concerned.

In this specific case that has prompted my call to action, the Utah Department of Wildlife Resources made a decision to euthanize a young, two-year-old bear who had been roaming on the benches of the Cache Valley for two days. A representative from the Department of Wildlife Resources said they initially responded and could not locate the bear, and days later, it showed up again. At that time, the department, along with local police agencies, chased the scared bear for hours.

The bear had made its way from the mountains looking for food and water due to extreme temperatures, extreme drought, and wildfires in the area. After the department was able to locate the bear, they said that due to it being overheated and unhealthy because of its lack of food and water, as well as the department being unable to find a suitable place to relocate the bear due to urban development and the increasing popularity of Utah's backcountry, euthanization was necessary. This is a poor response during this wildlife emergency. The lack of adequate resources or personnel and inadequate decision-making have left both locals and the wildlife suffering.

It's crucial that we hold the Department of Wildlife Resources accountable, demanding accountability, better training, and more effective response plans. We must ensure that our wildlife management practices not only safeguard animals and their habitats but also respect the needs and well-being of Utah’s communities.

With the changing landscape, I am calling on Governor Spencer Cox and the Utah Department of Wildlife Resources to thoroughly review and overhaul the current protocols for wildlife management. This involves increasing funding, proper training of personnel and police departments in mountain communities that may come into contact with wildlife, implementing a faster response time for wildlife emergencies, and an outcome that protects the wildlife of Utah, ensuring transparency in how these situations are handled. 

Utah’s natural wonders should be protected, not jeopardized by preventable mismanagement.
