Improve Weather Condition Policies at the University of Kentucky

The Issue

I am Haylei Pryce, a student at the University of Kentucky who strives to bring change on our campus. The current policies around weather conditions at our university need immediate attention. Many might easily recall the infamous video of a girl being blown away in the wind due to adverse weather, but how many of us pause to think about the safety of their fellow students when nature has a bad day?

Our concern? That the University of Kentucky doesn't shut its doors even when weather conditions are unsafe for students to commute. The current policy still requires us to attend classes even during extreme weather, putting our lives at risk.

As students, we are the first-hand witnesses and the ones directly impacted by these policies and we believe it's time our voices were heard. It is not just about our convenience, but our safety that's being compromised here. Let's not wait for another incident like the girl being blown away by the wind to occur to bring around changes in our weather condition policies.

In bringing about change, it's vital that our university administration re-evaluates and reformulates its policies to be more sensitive towards student safety during challenging weather.

Let's make it our mission to make our campus safer and more responsive to extreme weather conditions. It's high time that our university becomes an institution where student safety is not just a matter of policy, but a reality.
