Improve water quality in Cape Cod

The Issue

Living in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, I’ve witnessed firsthand how integral our beaches and waterways are to our community's identity. The pristine waters not only provide recreational opportunities such as swimming, boating, and fishing but also contribute significantly to our local economy. However, increasing pollution threatens these vital resources and ultimately the way of life that we cherish.

Our region boasts some of the most beautiful coastal and inland water bodies in the United States, but they are at a critical point. Elevated nutrient levels in local waters have resulted in the proliferation of harmful algal blooms, which are dangerous for marine life and can cause severe health issues for residents and wildlife alike, as reported by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection. Additionally, groundwater pollution from septic systems and outdated infrastructure further exacerbates the challenges faced by our waterways.

We need actionable legislation from our local government to address this growing problem. Effective measures should include upgrading wastewater treatment facilities, implementing stricter regulations on fertilizer runoff, and promoting sustainable practices. These solutions will help restore the water quality and preserve the natural beauty of our beloved Cape Cod.

We have a responsibility to protect these waters for future generations. Cape Cod’s economy is tied to its natural environment, healthier water systems mean a thriving community and a stronger economy. Now is the time to act. I urge the local government to pass crucial legislation that will improve water quality in Cape Cod.

Join me in advocating for clean and safe water by signing this petition. Together, we can ensure that our waters remain a source of life, enjoyment, and prosperity for all in Cape Cod.
