Improve UCSC Title IX Support for Victims and Implement Third-Party Investigations
The Issue
We have heard countless stories of victims regretting their decision to report to Title IX at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC). Instead of finding support and assistance in dealing with their trauma, they found an environment that added to it. It's disheartening to hear that a system designed to protect is now perceived as one that supports perpetrators rather than victims. This narrative must change.
We are calling for UCSC's Title IX office to undergo significant improvements in its approach towards victims. We demand increased staff training from professionals with credible experience in handling trauma associated with reporting such incidents. The current system lacks empathy and understanding, leaving victims feeling unsupported and unheard.
In addition, we propose the introduction of private investigators into the process. This would ensure impartiality and thoroughness in handling cases, providing a sense of justice for those affected.
Furthermore, we advocate for third-party investigations into schools' title ix systems across the country. Such external reviews would provide accountability and transparency - two elements currently lacking within these institutions.
Lastly, more resources should be allocated towards supporting victims through this difficult process - counseling services, legal advice or even just someone who listens can make a world of difference.
The time has come for UCSC's Title IX office to prioritize its students' safety over reputation management. Let us work together towards creating an environment where every student feels safe and supported when reporting sexual misconduct or harassment incidents at our university.
Please sign this petition if you believe in justice for all students at UCSC!
