Improve Gender-Affirming Surgery Options In BC

The Issue

As a transgender man who has been actively engaged with the Gender Surgery Program at Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH), I have first-hand experience of the challenges and shortcomings within the current system. I believe that addressing these issues is integral to the overall well-being of all transgender patients. The program at VCH has consistently fallen short of meeting the needs of its trans+ patients, leading to negative experiences and avoidable complications. Our current situation is far from ideal, and it is necessary that we advocate for the following improvements:

  1. Reduced Wait Times: The existing wait times, which are a minimum of 3+ years long, are causing undue distress and harm to trans+ patients. We insist on a substantial reduction in wait times to ensure that individuals can access the care that they need without enduring lengthy delays.
  2. Increased Surgeon Availability: Currently, the Gender Surgery Program at VCH has only two surgeons capable of performing lower surgery procedures. To expedite the process, we demand an increase in the number of qualified surgeons in the province. This is crucial for reducing wait times and ensuring that patients can access the surgeries that they need without unnecessary delays.
  3. Extended Operating Room (OR) Time: An increase in OR time for patients is essential. This not only reduces the waiting period for surgeries but also ensures that required revisions can be performed promptly. It's crucial to provide the necessary time and resources for these surgical procedures to be conducted safely and effectively.
  4. Improved Communication: Effective and compassionate communication from the Gender Surgery Program is  integral throughout the gender-affirming surgery process. The lack of proper communication from the Program only adds to the distress experienced by patients. We require the medical team at the Gender Surgery Program to enhance their communication with patients, ensuring that they are well-informed and supported throughout their treatment.
  5. Improved Training: We demand better training for the Gender Surgery Program's medical team, with a focus on bringing in new staff and advancing the skills of those we currently have. Proper training is necessary for creating a healthcare environment that is understanding and respectful of the unique needs of trans+ individuals.

Transgender healthcare should be considered a fundamental right that is accessible to all. We must hold our healthcare providers and government accountable for upholding this right. If you believe in equal access to quality healthcare for all, we urge you to support this petition. Together, we can work towards a healthcare system that is inclusive, supportive, and responsive to the needs of the transgender community.
