Improve train connectivity between Santa Barbara and San Francisco.

Improve train connectivity between Santa Barbara and San Francisco.
El problema
Access to reliable public transportation is more than just a convenience, it’s a fundamental right that allows individuals the freedom to move within their country, fostering independence, equal opportunity, and a higher quality of life for everyone.
As residents and travelers along California’s beautiful Central Coast, we understand the challenges of navigating the region. Whether for work, school, or leisure, the lack of efficient and direct train connectivity between Santa Barbara (Goleta) and San Francisco has left many of us reliant on cars. This not only clogs Highway 101 with traffic but also increases greenhouse gas emissions, harming our environment and quality of life, while increasing the risk of traffic accidents.
California is known for its leadership in sustainability and innovation, so why not apply that same vision to our rail system? Improving train services between these two cities would offer a faster, greener, and more reliable alternative for thousands of commuters and tourists alike. We are calling on Amtrak, Caltrans, and the California High-Speed Rail Authority to prioritize this critical transportation link and help build a better future for our communities.
Currently, train travel between Santa Barbara and San Francisco is inefficient and poorly connected:
- The travel time is around 9 hours and 30 minutes with few direct routes.
- The frequency of passage is limited: only one daily train is available. Inconvenient for weekends and holidays.
- The infrastructure is outdated leading to delays and inconsistent service. The infrequent rail traffic leads to rust accumulation that hinders service.
This forces many travelers to rely on cars, contributing to traffic congestion, air pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions along the Highway 101 corridor, which averages between 100,000 and 150,000 vehicles per day.
We call on Amtrak and Stephen J. Gardner, its CEO, as well as on Tony Tavares from the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) to take immediate action by:
- Upgrading infrastructure to ensure faster and more reliable service.
- Increasing train frequency.
- Implementing affordable fare options to encourage public transportation use.
- Collaborating with local governments to promote rail transit over private vehicle use.
Investing in improved train connectivity will:
- Provide commuters and travelers with an eco-friendly alternative: trains emit about 10 times less CO₂ per passenger-kilometer compared to passenger vehicles.
- Strengthen economic ties between communities along the Central Coast: local businesses near stations, like cafes or shops, will be able to generate more income.
- Encourage tourism while reducing the environmental impact.
- Enhance the quality of life for residents by reducing the stress of long commutes and heavy traffic. In 2021, California reported 4,285 traffic fatalities. Some of them could have been avoided with public transportation. Additionally, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, 24% of moves in 2022 were within the same state. This suggests that a significant number of families live in different cities within the same state and could be interested in being connected with their families.
Our petition is a complement to The California High-Speed Rail project whose completion is still years away (projected to 2033) and Santa Barbara not included in the current plans. Our communities along the Central Coast need solutions now. The idea is to provide better public transportation to smaller cities and regions that may not directly benefit from the initial CHSR rollout improving existing services.
Sign this petition to demand better train connectivity between Santa Barbara and San Francisco. Together, we can build a future where public transportation is the first choice for travelers, fostering a more sustainable and connected California.
