The Issue

Every school morning and afternoon, the safety of children, parents, and staff at Taft Elementary School in Wayne, Michigan, are put in jeopardy due to drivers disregarding stop signs near the school. This situation is deeply concerning to me because it only takes one moment of carelessness for a child or parent to face injury or even worse. The critical scenes unfold near the intersection of Taft and Gloria Street, where many drivers consistently neglect to halt at stop signs when approaching the school crosswalks. Despite the presence of a dedicated crossing guard, the disregard for traffic laws is alarming and has resulted in the guard experiencing numerous close calls, and even getting bumped by a careless driver. Compounding the issue, drivers are frequently seen on their cellphones when passing through this bustling school zone, further heightening the risk of accidents. Traffic congestion is another prevalent problem, stretching from the school beyond the crosswalk on Gloria Street, exacerbating safety concerns. We propose several actionable solutions to mitigate these dangers:
1. Increase enforcement of traffic laws during school hours, including deploying police officers to monitor driver behavior and enforce stop sign compliance.
2. Implement traffic-calming measures such as speed humps and additional updated new signage along with radar trailers to alert drivers of the school zone and crosswalks.
3. Initiate a community awareness campaign to educate drivers on the importance of road safety in school zones, particularly the need to remain attentive and free from distractions like mobile phones. Addressing these issues is crucial to ensuring the safety of our children, parents, and school staff. Your support is vital to bringing this change to fruition. Let's prioritize safety and make Taft Elementary a secure environment for our community. Please sign this petition to urge local authorities to take immediate action.

A Message from the Mayor: Addressing Traffic Concerns Near Taft Galloway Elementary: As Mayor, I want to personally acknowledge the traffic concerns that have been raised near Taft Galloway Elementary School. The safety of our students, families, and residents is a top priority for the City of Wayne. The Wayne Police Department has conducted an extensive study of traffic patterns in the area, increased enforcement through officer presence, and engaged in productive discussions with school officials, the crossing guard, and members of the community. I’m pleased to share that we have a plan in place to install speed bumps near the school. These improvements are scheduled to be completed by the start of the 2025-2026 school year. We remain committed to continuing to work with the school district to create a safer environment for everyone, and I thank you for your continued support and cooperation. Sincerely, John Rhaesa Mayor, City of Wayne
