As a commercial truck driving instructor, I have repeatedly witnessed preventable traffic accidents at the intersection of Tower RD and E Smith RD. Commercial vehicles southbound in the turning lane heading eastbound do not receive regular signals. This lack of consistent signaling forces commercial traffic to maneuver through yellow or red lights, resulting in numerous accidents and injuries. This intersection is a heavy commercial traffic zone; hence a better-regulated traffic light system is needed to maintain safety. In the United States alone, 60% of all accidents occur at intersections, resulting in many unnecessary injuries and fatalities (Federal Highway Administration). Moreover, an Australian study showed that modifying traffic signal timings reduced traffic accidents by 25% (Monash University Accident Research Centre). The urgency for action is reflected in these statistics. We need a more consistent eastbound turn signal at the intersection of Tower RD and E Smith RD to prevent these needless accidents.
