As a daily commuter through the intersection of Gavin Street, Penrose Road, and Portman Road in Mount Wellington, Auckland, I experience first-hand the inefficiencies and dangers that this junction can present. Penrose Road is a major thoroughfare used by many people. It becomes particularly congested during morning and afternoon peak hours with an incessant flow of cars. The problem extends to the meeting points of Gavin Street and Portman Road as well; these streets are often blocked up during busy times making it impossible for traffic to move efficiently.

This situation is not only frustrating but also can be potentially dangerous. It’s not uncommonI find myself waiting for over 10 minutes just to find an appropriate gap in traffic so that I can cross this intersection safely - a reality shared by more than just myself I’m sure. 

I believe the current state of affairs at this intersection is unacceptable considering its importance as a key transport link within our community. We need an improved design for this junction that will allow fair movement of traffic in a safe efficient manner.

According to data from Auckland Transport (2019), there has been an increase in vehicle numbers on these roads over recent years due to population growth in the area which further exacerbates the issue.

We call upon local authorities to address these concerns promptly by undertaking necessary improvements at this intersection - redesigning it for better flow of traffic while ensuring safety measures are put into place.
