The Issue

We, the undersigned animal lovers and supporters of ethical wildlife care, respectfully request a review of the welfare and social integration plan for Punch, the baby Japanese macaque currently being cared for at Ichikawa City Zoo.

Punch captured the hearts of people around the world after videos showed him seeking comfort from a plush toy following early rejection by his mother. Many supporters understand that the zoo’s goal is to help Punch integrate with other macaques so that he can grow up behaving naturally within his species.

However, recent videos and reports appear to show Punch experiencing repeated aggression and rejection from other monkeys. Supporters are concerned that he may be under significant stress during this process.

We respectfully request that the zoo consider the following measures to support Punch’s wellbeing:

• Conduct a review of Punch’s current social integration plan with primate behavior specialists.

• Consider introducing Punch to a calm or nurturing adult female macaque that could act as a surrogate or mentor.

• Provide appropriate enrichment or comfort items if they help reduce stress during this transition.

• Ensure close monitoring to prevent prolonged bullying or physical harm.

• Provide transparent updates to the public regarding Punch’s welfare and progress.

Our goal is not to criticize the zoo or its staff, but to advocate for the best possible welfare outcome for Punch. We appreciate the efforts of the caretakers and hope that by working together, the zoo and the global community can ensure that Punch grows up safe, healthy, and socially supported.

Punch’s story has touched millions of people around the world. We hope that Ichikawa City Zoo will consider these concerns and take any steps necessary to ensure the highest standard of care for this young macaque.

Thank you for your attention and dedication to animal welfare.
