Improve the Treatment and Rights of Au Pairs in the United States

The Issue

Our time with our au pair was a revelation, not just about her incredible dedication and hard work, but also on the plight and exploitation that au pairs often experience at the hands of agencies. Shockingly, we learned that when their contracts end, little care goes into arranging how these young people are flown home.  They are only allowed one piece of luggage for an entire year or even two away from home.  They are booked on the most basic fares that don’t even allow a full sized carry on without paying more.  In order to take 2 bags a carry on and a personal item on an international flight, our au pair will have to pay an estimated $325 or more.

They're also saddled with burdensome educational cost as agencies provide minimal options for obligatory educational credits, often requiring travel to distant locations, instead of allowing them to choose local, affordable options.

Au pairs contribute significantly to U.S. households, providing invaluable assistance to families. Their welfare and quality of life, therefore, should not be compromised. It's crucial to ensure they receive fair treatment and have full access to affordable education, suitable travel arrangements, and dignity they rightly deserve.

Based on this important cause, we request policy makers, agencies and concerned bodies to uphold the rights of au pairs, ensure fair treatment and create policies that protect them from exploitation. This includes arranging proper travel accommodations, providing reasonable and affordable options for their educational requirements, and transparency in all transactions.

Let's honor their invaluable contribution to our homes by supporting these young individuals' well-being and growth. Please sign this petition to bring about a positive change in the lives of au pairs in the United States.
