The Issue

Growing up in Montrose, Colorado, I found my passion in skateboarding. It wasn't just a hobby; it was a way of life that instilled confidence, camaraderie, and joy. Our local skatepark has been a gathering place for the youth and a cradle for budding talent. I've witnessed first-hand how the skateboarding community has positively influenced many young lives, offering a sense of belonging and a productive outlet for their energy.

However, the current state of the Montrose skatepark is far from perfect. The facilities are aging and, quite frankly, have become a safety hazard. The worn-out ramps and dilapidated equipment not only limit the potential for new skateboarders but also discourage experienced skaters from honing their skills. This decline in infrastructure undermines the vibrant skateboarding culture that Montrose is known for.

Improving our skatepark could significantly impact our community. By upgrading the equipment and expanding the facilities, we can create a safe, accessible environment that encourages more youth participation. Funding for these improvements could be achieved through local government initiatives, seeking grants specifically for recreational projects, or partnering with businesses that align with our goals. Engaging in these efforts can revitalize not only our skatepark but also the overall sense of community enthusiasm.

Skateparks have been proven to reduce youth crime rates in numerous communities by providing a supervised space for young people to spend their time constructively. According to the Tony Hawk Foundation, well-designed and maintained parks are safe spaces that foster a sense of community, increase local business traffic, and improve the quality of life for residents.

The Montrose Skatepark has long been a hub for local youth, but its current infrastructure is outdated. We are launching this petition to urge city officials to invest in our community by upgrading the park with:

-Enhanced Safety & Access: Installing proper night lighting and functional water fountains.

-Community Comfort: Adding shaded seating areas for families, spectators, and skaters.

-Progression & Growth: Introducing new obstacles that cater to all skill levels and encourage the growth of our local skate community.

Montrose deserves a skatepark that matches the talent and passion of its skaters. Join me in advocating for these pivotal changes. Let’s make our skatepark a symbol of pride for Montrose once more. Sign this petition to show your support for enhancing our local skatepark facilities and empowering the youth of our community.
