Improve Suicide Crisis Line Services for Disabled and Non-Speaking Individuals

The Issue

I am a survivor. I almost lost my life to suicide. During the height of my crisis, I reached out to a suicide hotline, but because I was unable to speak, they hung up on me. In desperation, I tried a text line but couldn't respond quickly enough due to my impaired motor movements caused by the emotional state I was in.

This is not just my story; it's the story of countless others who face similar challenges every day. It's time we address this issue head-on and ensure that everyone has equal access to life-saving resources.

Suicide attempts in the United States showed a substantial and alarming increase over the last decade. Measures in New York have been taken to decrease these numbers, but our current system fails those who are disabled or non-speaking - individuals who may be at an even higher risk.

We need more comprehensive training for crisis line responders so they can effectively assist callers with different abilities and communication methods. We also need alternative support options such augmentative and alternative communication device (AAC) options, that allow more time for responses or specialized services tailored specifically towards those with disabilities.

By signing this petition, you're advocating for equal access to mental health resources and potentially saving lives in our community. Let's make sure no call goes unanswered again; let's make sure everyone gets heard regardless of their ability to speak or move quickly. Please sign this petition today.
