Improve Street Lighting & Footpaths at Hineys Funeral Home Crossmolina, for Safety of ALL
The Issue
We, the Community here in Crossmolina, Co Mayo are deeply concerned about the safety of thousands of people who attend funerals every year at our local funeral home, Hineys of Crossmolina. The area outside this funeral home is extremely dangerous due to inadequate street lighting and footpath infrastructure. This fear is not unfounded, as there was a terrible accident there last weekend and luckily those involved were not seriously hurt, its a miracle really, however if something is not done there soon, someone will loose their life at this treacherous spot. The risk of accidents in poorly lit areas is significantly higher, especially for pedestrians and bear in mind that pedestrians in this area are usually wearing dark/black clothes as they are attending a funeral.
Pedestrian Fatalities in Ireland: According to the Road Safety Authority (RSA) in Ireland, of the 184 road deaths in 2023, 69 were drivers, 44 were pedestrians, 34 were passengers, 26 were motorcyclists, 8 were cyclists and 3 were e-scooter users pedestrian fatalities. EVERY one of these stats is too many, everyone results in heartbreak and lives being torn apart. Pedestrians are additionally vulnerable, especially outside a funeral home, with dark clothes on, no lighting and no footpaths - hence they tend to use the road instead of walking on a muddy sideway.
Insufficient Footpaths and Accidents: whilst THANK GOD no fatalities have occurred outside Hineys Funeral Home, general data indicates that areas lacking proper footpaths are more susceptible to pedestrian accidents.
To date, community engagement and lobbying efforts have failed to address the problem and rectify safety concerns. This highlights the potential impact our collective voice can have in prompting positive changes.
We must insist that the requested footpaths and lighting enhancements around Hineys Funeral Home is worked on ASAP.
We must lobby those in power to install adequate street lighting and construct safe footpaths outside this funeral home. By doing so, we can prevent future accidents from occurring in this area that sees such high traffic during times when individuals are already dealing with loss.
Please sign this petition to urge our local authorities to take immediate action on these pressing safety issues. Let's ensure that those paying their respects do not have to worry about their safety while doing so.
