The Issue

In our neighborhood, we've witnessed heart-wrenching scenes where baby ducklings have fallen into storm drains, leaving them separated from their mothers. Just recently, two ducklings were rescued and are currently being nursed back to health by my neighbor before being released back into the wild. This isn't just an isolated incident—it's a recurring problem that needs urgent attention.

Hillsborough County is home to diverse wildlife, and as residents, we have a shared responsibility to ensure their safety while also maintaining the infrastructure of our neighborhoods. The current design of our storm drains poses a significant threat to these small creatures, primarily because the openings are large enough to trap them, leading to injuries or even death.

We call on the Hillsborough County Public Works Department to implement modifications to storm drains in neighborhoods adjacent to or within areas that contain wildlife. By adding protective bars and reducing the size of the openings in front of these drains, we can prevent tragic accidents.

Moreover, these changes wouldn't only benefit ducklings but would also protect other small animals that are part of our ecosystem. Such improvements can be effective and relatively low-cost and would significantly reduce the distress caused to both the animals and the compassionate residents who spring into action to save them.

Success in this endeavor would mean safer neighborhoods and a thriving, protected local wildlife population. It's an achievable goal that requires thoughtful planning and prompt action.

Please sign this petition to urge the Hillsborough County Public Works Department to prioritize this vital enhancement to our community’s storm drain systems, preserving both our infrastructure and our wildlife heritage.
