Many nursing homes do not have enough staff, and this is hurting residents’ mental health and dignity. When caregivers are responsible for too many people at once, they have to rush through care and cannot spend time talking with residents or giving them emotional support. This often leaves residents feeling lonely, ignored, and less respected. A national survey found that 98% of nursing home operators report having trouble hiring staff, showing that understaffing is a serious and widespread problem.

This issue is not caused by workers who do not care, but by a system that does not provide enough staff. I am asking the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), state lawmakers, and nursing home companies to require and enforce minimum staffing levels in nursing homes.
