The Issue

Unsafe Sidewalks in the Philippines

In many parts of the Philippines, sidewalks are no longer safe spaces for pedestrians. Instead of protecting people, they have become broken, narrow, blocked, or completely unusable. Cracked pavements, open drains, parked vehicles, street vendors, and poor lighting force pedestrians, especially students, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities to walk on busy roads.

Pedestrians, cyclists, and riders are among the most vulnerable road users. According to Department of Transportation, pedestrians made up 27% of road-related deaths in Metro Manila and 12% of those injured in traffic accidents in 2021.

This situation puts lives at risk every day. Pedestrians are exposed to traffic accidents, injuries, and unnecessary danger simply because there is no safe place to walk. Sidewalks are supposed to support safe mobility, but poor maintenance and weak enforcement have turned them into obstacles rather than protection.

Safe sidewalks are not a luxury, they are a basic right. Everyone deserves to walk without fear.

This is where you come in.

We need change, and your voice matters. By signing this petition, you are actively standing up for:

• Safer streets for students and commuters
• Accessibility for the elderly and persons with disabilities
• Better urban planning and government accountability

Your signature is a call for action. It tells local authorities that pedestrian safety matters and that sidewalks should serve the people not endanger them.

Let’s demand sidewalks that are safe, accessible, and truly walkable. Sign this petition and help make our streets safer for everyone.
