The Issue

Having lived in Shelbyville for many years, I've witnessed countless times when residents had to navigate unsafe streets due to a lack of proper infrastructure. Families, students walking to school, workers commuting to their jobs, and even drivers navigating busy intersections face challenges daily because our city lacks adequate sidewalks, crosswalks, and bike lanes. This isn't just an inconvenience; it's a real safety concern that puts our community at risk.

Shelbyville and Bedford County are bustling with activity. Yet, the absence of reliable pedestrian and cyclist infrastructure creates dangerous situations for everyone. Statewide crash data shows that pedestrian and cyclist involvement in traffic incidents is a continued concern in Tennessee.Between 2020 and 2024, more than 8,300 pedestrians were involved in reported traffic crashes across Tennessee, highlighting the very need for thoughtful planning. Inadequate infrastructure contributes to unsafe conditions for all people walking, biking, and driving. In cities with well-developed pedestrian and cyclist infrastructure, these numbers are significantly lower. Shelbyville can and should be one of these safer cities.

Investing in infrastructure improvements like expanded sidewalks, clearly marked crosswalks, and dedicated bike lanes would benefit not just pedestrians and cyclists, but also enhance road safety for drivers and create a more vibrant local economy. Safe streets would encourage more families to engage in outdoor activities, enable students to walk or bike to school safely, and boost local businesses by making them more accessible to foot and bike traffic.

The solutions are clear. Addressing this issue requires intentional planning and prioritization of sidewalks, crosswalks, and bike infrastructure as part of routine street and transportation projects. A coordinated, city-wide approach would allow these improvements to be introduced gradually while aligning with existing safety, maintenance, and development goals.

The council increased the budget for road repairs from 250,000 to 500,000 last year. We have been laying sidewalks for a number of years Deery st and on Madison st. We are working on a walk or bike trail where the railroad tracks are. I agree more needs to happen but the city is engaged in a number of projects plus the cost of running the city there are only so many funds. Thank you for your interest and concerns, we need more investment from citizens like yourself.
